Poetry of Nature

Here are a few poems I've written that have been inspired by the world around me. I see something every day and note it for later. A storm chasing excursion, a rainbow, a patch of shade on a hot summer walk, the swallows returning in June.

I know some little birds

That make a ruckus at the dawn

But I don't say two words

Since they fertilize the lawn

A patch of shade

That's what a tree provides

You really have it made

When sun across sky glides

But more, a lofty tree

Gives home and fodder

For the squirrel, bird & bee

And others far more odder

A tree is like a tenement

Apartments at many a level

But dwellers don't pay the rent

They make merry, they revel

In wintertime the tree

Reduces its exhausts

And saves the heat, the energy

To defend it from the frosts

So next time the tree gives

You shade from summer heat

Remember, it too lives

And thank it when you meet

Through the rain curtain, mist

The vista sparkling, muted

Awash the greenery, sere desist

Rain cleanses, leaving less polluted

Drink up, through the soil

Assuage the thirst, drink more

Be lavish, let the roots embroil

Soak up to the vibrant core

Run the heavy river, churning

Down through the narrow gorge

Crafted artfully, ever turning

In nature's ancient rocky forge

Some creatures lift their maws

Some hide, ensconced till deluge passes

Lightening following its laws

Brightened sky, seen by masses

Gentle drops now on the leaves

Gentle touch like morning dew

A path, rain toward earth, weaves

Landscape soaked, sky back to blue

The rainbow arcs incompletely

A spectrum of vibrant hue

Oh marvel that beauty yet be true

These clouds signal time to go storm chasing!

Cauliflowers in the distance

Do you see them?,

Bubbling up on the horizon

Let's go chase 'em!

With radio in lap

We hurry for the storm

When other folks are warned

We are informed

Watch the clouds whirl

Watch the nodules unfurl

Mammati dipping low

Round pillows of cloud

Upside down

Is there a vortex spinning?

Beeeeep beeeeeep beeeeeeep beeeeeeep, wait

The weather warning voiced

Twister spotted elsewhere in the state

Look for rotation first

But nature is so cunning

In an instant, tornado dropping down

Any closer, you'd be running

Be at a safe distance

Know what you are doing

Don't take this lightly

Agitated clouds are brewing

This day no one injured

Nature just staging an event

No serious damage

Praise the lord and amen

Every year the swallows did

Return to Capistrano

The city grew close, the bugs outbid

Now, at the Mission, not much guano

In Lyons, Colorado, our own migration

Of swallows swooping down in June

The bugs, the river, are fine temptation

Nesting in spruce or outside a room

And in Boulder's urban streets

At intersections the swallows play

Above the black macadam heat

They dart and swoop with no delay

I've seen them every year, now ten

They dive and dip through the parking lot

Next year they will return again
